CAN THE CINCINNATI REDS RECOVER FROM TERRIBLE FIRST MONTH OF SEASON

The Cincinnati Reds have gotten off to a terrible start this season.  Being a long-time baseball and Cincinnati Reds fan the question I asked myself was canning the Reds to turn their season around?  I am not sure they can!

During the offseason, the Reds lost most of their offense to free agency or traded them away.  They lost Nick Castellanos who was playing at an MVP level most of last season.  They also lost other big bats in the lineup in Jesse Winker and Suarez.  Suarez had a bad year last year but was still only one year removed from a 50 HR season.  Then they also lost 2-time gold glove catcher Tucker Barnhart which I think everyone knew was coming with the emergence of Tyler Stephenson last season.

That is not counting all the itching’s the Reds lost over the offseason as well.  They lost Sonny Gray and Wade Miley who were both solid starting pitchers for the reds.  Also lost relievers, Amir Garrett, and Michael Lorenzen as well. Some of the trades they made in the offseason were Mind-boggling.  You trade a two-time gold glove catcher for a minor league third baseman.

The worst part of it all is that the Reds front office did nothing to try and bring in some solid guys to help replace what they lost in free agency.  They have also been ravaged by injuries this season so far. Therefore I believe they are digging themselves too deep of a hole to get out of.  They have the worst record in baseball at 3-14 and are 1-11 in their last 12 games.   The sad part is I don’t think the front office cares that they are losing. They want all the first-round picks they can get and reduce their payroll and try to develop their picks and win why do they have their young players on cheaper deals.  Hopefully, as they get healthy, they will be more competitive but I think it’s time for David Bell to be on the hot seat.  The season is still young, they might turn it around.
