CAN YOU DIGG IT?

With the likes of Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliot, CeeDee Lamb, and Amari Cooper leading the way, the Cowboys have put together an offensive assault that most defenses can’t contain. While this high-powered offense has had its ups and downs, the Cowboys’ defense over the last few years has been a known issue and has only gotten worse. But have they finally found their answer? In the 2020 – 2021 season the Dallas Cowboys defense hit rock bottom and many fingers were pointed at their poor secondary play. The Cowboys defense ranked 22nd in total yards allowed, 27th in passing touchdowns against, and 23rd in Interception only intercepting the quarterback 10 times.

Although the Cowboys are still ranked in the bottom half of the league in total passing yards given up and total touchdowns, this year’s defense looks just a little different. The Dallas Cowboys’ secondary has become a turnover machine leading the league after week 5 with 10 interceptions. Subsequently, they picked up another one in week 6 against the New England Patriots. Who’s the star of this newfound defensive machine? Trevon Diggs. In 12 games last season Diggs raked in a total of 57 tackles, 14 Pass Deflections, 1 sack, and 3 Int. Not a bad rookie season, right? Well, Trevon Diggs has started this season off with an interception in each of the Cowboys’ first 6 games. After picking off Mac Jones to help Dallas secure a victory in overtime 35-29. Diggs is currently on pace to shatter the single-season interception record of 14 set by Dick “Night Train: Lane in 1952. Diggs is also on pace to end the season with 6 defensive Touchdowns, which would break the record for most defensive touchdowns in a single season set by Ken Houston in 1971, and tie the record for the most non-offensive touchdowns in a single season set by Devin Hester in 2006 and again in 2007.

Just 2 years into his young career Trevon Diggs is the pace to do something Hall of Famers such as Deion Sanders, Darrel Revis, Charles Woodson, Ronnie Lott, and Lester Hayes, we’re unable to accomplish. He is single-handedly changing the narrative of an underachieving defense overnight. With the Dallas Cowboys playing in one of the worst divisions in football, they are in complete control of their destiny only 6 games into the 2021 season. With one of the brightest young stars in the league, I’ll leave you with this question…Can You Digg It?
