Summer of the BEARS

Everything’s coming up Justin Fields so far in 2023 as General Manager Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears have done everything they can this offseason to give the soon to be year three quarterback a chance to win more games. This offseason has been a great look for Bears fans as some new faces and some old are getting together and putting in some offseason work. Justin Fields, Cole Kmet, Darnell Mooney and newly added franchise wide out DJ Moore got together last week on a private field and ran some drills. The importance of this is obviously to be a better and real chemistry together as a unit before training camp begins in the next couple of weeks.

The only player not seen participating with the team has been Chase Claypool, however he was still fully engaged with the offense on the sideline during OTAs as he was recovering from a lingering injury which he hopes will be resolved by the start of camp. Nonetheless the talk of the summer in Chi Town has been the  connection between DJ Moore and Justin Fields who seem to have had an instant connection with each other ever since OTAs back in June.

This is undoubtedly the most important summer of the young quarterbacks NFL career so far, where in year one he wasn’t even allowed to get reps with the first stringers, year two being unknown and the roster being very underwhelming but now Justin Fields and the offense finally are in a position where they can get the ball rolling. To the surprise of no one, Bears fans are expecting a big year from the gunslinger who finished last season with over 1000 yards on the ground and 2,242 yards thrown with a 17:11 TD/INT ratio. Adding in a huge addition like DJ Moore who has had 3 consecutive 1,100+ receiving yard seasons in his 5 years in the league so far and over 5,000 yards in total will be huge for Fields in big game situations which the offense lacked in 2022. Also adding in veterans like former Tennessee Titans guard Nate Davis, former star tight end Robert Tonyan, the young bull in Offensive Tackle  Tennessee Volunteer Darnell Wright and one of the most dynamic running back rooms in all of the NFL. In many fans’ eyes Justin Fields not only has the opportunity to have a great season development wise but could even potentially join the MVP conversation like others in years before him such as Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and others who all succeeded after their teams revamped the offensive production around them.

On the other side of the ball Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus have done a lot this offseason adding to this defense that had many holes last season and they don’t seem to be done yet either. Two big names right now that are continuing to build a connection are year two safety Jaquan Brisker and veteran safety Eddie Jackson. The two missed the remainder of the 2022-2023 season after Brisker suffered a huge concussion and Jackson with a lisfranc injury (joint in the foot) but when they were on the field together they had one of the best 1-2 punches in the entire NFL with Brisker’s physical play and Jackson’s ability to see and read the field. As for the Cornerback room, star corner Jaylon Johson has finally came around and began participating late in OTAs even during contract disputes that both Johnson and The Bears have made clear they hope to get resolved before the season starts in September. As for year two nickel Kyler Gordon and newly drafted corner out of Miami Tyrique Stevenson they have begun to build their trust in one another on and off the field while still learning as much as they can before the season kicks off. However, the talk of the town on defense is without question the linebacker room, with the additions of Buffalo Bills star Tremaine Edmunds and former college and now current teammates in TJ Edwards (former Eagle) and year two, Illinois native Jack Sanborn. On many respective pages the Chicago Bears are viewed to now have one of if not the best linebacker room in all of the NFL, bringing back the tradition of the monsters of the midway. The main question for the Bears going into this season will of course be the defense line with the additions of Florida Gator rookie Gervon Dexter, DeMarcus Walker who was coming off a career year with the Titans in 2022 and to the voice of Matt Eberlus still other big name free agents that are still available who might end up in a Bears uniform by September.
