Injury Challenges
In a clash of Western Conference powerhouses last night, the Phoenix Suns and the Denver Nuggets faced off with both teams grappling with the absence of key contributors from their starting lineups.
The Suns, coming off of a long road trip, found themselves without the essential presence of Devin Booker, nursing an ankle sprain sustained in their previous matchup against the Raptors. Adding to the challenge, Bradley Beal, the number three in our Big Three, watched from the bench as he diligently works towards a complete recovery from a lingering back injury.
The Denver Nuggets were without their star point guard, Jamal Murray. His absence left a void in the backcourt, but adding to the Nuggets’ injury woes was the absence of Aaron Gordon patrolling the paint on defense. Without his towering presence, the Nuggets faced a tough challenge in maintaining their defensive stronghold by depending on Jokic to do it alone.
The absence of all these key figures added an extra layer of intrigue to the match-up, turning the game into a strategic chess match where both teams would have to adapt. Despite the setbacks, both squads set the stage for an intriguing showdown as they both work their way back to full health.
Suns’ Defensive Struggles In The First Half
Jokic broke down the Suns’ defense with surgical precision using his passing. This would be the theme for most of the game as the Nuggets finished with 38 assists and only 9 turnovers, Jokic owning 16 of those assists.
“That’s another night of just incredible, unselfish basketball,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “Everyone playing for the man next to them, making the right play.”
The Nuggets’ big man seemed to steal all of the defense’s attention while others would take advantage and find open space on a back cut. Sometimes the paint would just open up for the Nuggets and the Suns gave them layup-drill levels of open space.
However, It didn’t help that the Mile-High Men couldn’t miss if they tried. They shot out of the first quarter like a cannon with a staggering 79.2% field goal percentage, draining 19 out of their 24 first shots.
Kevin Durant Top Ten All-Time Scorer
The Suns’ much-anticipated story line for tonight’s game wasn’t just about the tonight’s game on the court; it was about witnessing Kevin Durant etch his name into the annals of NBA history.
Picture this: in the vast tapestry of the NBA, with nearly 4,500 players having graced the hardwood, only 9 basketball legends stand above Durant in career points.
Last night, KD surpassed none other than the colossal figure of Hall of Famer Moses Malone. Malone, a titan of the game from 1974 to 1995, Malone claimed three championships and three MVP awards, leaving an undeniable mark on the NBA.
And yet, Durant soared past him, now standing among the elite with 27,423 points to his name. Last night wasn’t just a game, it was a page turned in the saga of basketball legends, putting possibly the most iconic scorer of all-time where he should be, in the top ten.
Nurkic Clashes with Former Teammate Jokic
Despite the grand spectacle of Kevin Durant’s monumental achievement, a surprising narrative unfolded as the Suns’ player of the game emerged from an unexpected source – the Bosnian Baller, Jusuf Nurkic.
Nurkic embraced the challenge and rose to the occasion against his old teammate, Nikola Jokic. It was, quite literally, a tall order to anticipate Nurkic outshining arguably the best player in the NBA. Yet, not only did he outscore every other Phoenix Sun on the court, but he also eclipsed Jokic in the scoring department.
Nurkic’s performance was a masterclass in old-school finesse and power in the paint, reminiscent of the center-dominated era of ’70s basketball. In a showdown resembling back-to-the-basket battles of yesteryear, both Nurkic and Jokic waged a war in the paint, with Nurkic showcasing a blend of strength and finesse that might have earned him a few more believers in the Phoenix fan base.
In a cruel twist of fate, the blazing performance of Nurkic was extinguished in the form of a contentious call, a moment that marked a clenching shift in the game’s momentum.
The Suns’ loss last night seemed like a culmination of a few tough breaks. Devin Booker’s absence and a couple of questionable calls in crunch time added some insurmountable hurdles. The first-half defensive struggles and Kevin Durant’s quieter second half also contributed to the uphill battle.
In the end, it felt like any one of these factors were different, could have swung the outcome. It’s one of those games where you look back and wonder how a few twists of fate might have changed the story.

Time to flush that game out and focus on the next one. The Suns will face off against the complete opposite of the Nuggets when it comes to competition in the Memphis Grizzlies. So we can all hope to expect a lot more of a dominant performance tonight at 7 PM.
